Hello cake decorating geniuses!

I have a rather peculiar question regarding Vegetable Shortening. Due to allergies that I have to work with I cannot use any vegetable shortenings that include palm oil. Unfortunately Crisco just recently added hydrogenated palm oil to their products.

Do any of you wonderful people know of a vegetable shortening that does not contain palm oil? Or any good frosting recipes that are not overly sweet, do not contain butter (I can replace milk with soy) or shortening? Working with lard in frosting is very frustrating because it makes it very sweet.

A few weeks ago, many of you gave me terrific ideas for making 'ho ho like icing' for my friends baby shower. The cake came out ok. Everyone seemed to love it but I am to hard on myself and say only the imperfections. That's what happens when you give yourself 6 hours for baking, cooling, icing, going out to buy more ingredients, baking, cooling, icing, covering with fondant and decorating..... all in one night when you are sick. :)

Any tips or techniques would be appreciated.

Hello all you marvelous cake decoraters! I've been an avid reader/lurker of the community for the longest time and am constantly in awe of the amazing cakes that you all create.

I am looking to learn/self teach cake decorating and my partner is willing to buy me some tools/supplies to help me get started. I've looked on various websites and I see that Wilton tools/accessories are a common theme. Are they worth the money?

Basically, what do you think are the most necessary items to get started? What are the tools you can't live without?

I live in Perth, Australia and haven't seen many shops so I think I would be ordering online.

Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The plan was simple: bake a chocolate cake, fill it with white chocolate ganache, and frost it with chocolate frosting.

The cake turned out great. It was an eggless recipe that used buttermilk. I'll definitely make it again.

The ganache for some reason wound up watery. It was a delicious white chocolate milkshake, but certainly not anything I could fill a cake with. I tried to thicken it with more chocolate, but it just broke.

Then I tried the chocolate frosting. First batch, I didn't slurry the cornstarch and it turned gloppy and watery.

Second batch mixed fine, but never thickened. I ended up with a really tasty chocolate sauce. Again, yummy, but nothing I could frost a cake with. (I may later beat in some powdered sugar to see if I can make something out of it. Or I may drizzle it on my breakfast cereal. :) 0

Finally, with my last batch of white chocolate and cream, I put together a white chocolate buttercream. Stuck in a little almond extract and voila! Filled and frosted the cake with a little left over.

Sheesh.

I am very happy to introduce one of the latest girls at simplyKir's.

She arrived a while ago but I didn't have time to upload all the pics I took of her. These are the first photos of Marie, taken the same day of her arrival.

You might know her already, ;). Sorry her first pics are not as good as the lovely makers took but I will do my best to show you her soul ;).

Marie is a little french girl who lived in Paris in the 18th century. Thanks to Ravendolls and Marblehands, she is now with us again and she can tell us in her perfect french all kind of interesting stories.

9" Chocolate Vanilla Checkerboard Cake, with vanilla syrup, strawberry preserves, Lindt milk chocolate frosting and milk chocolate caramel sauce between each layer. Covered with Lindt milk chocolate frosting, dark chocolate shavings and milk chocolate caramel sauce.
